Why I Work

Recently, I had a mom make a comment about the fact that I work (something about paying someone else to raise my child).  I'm all for staying home with your kids (as long as they are given proper socialization... I've seen what happens when a child doesn't socialize regularly).  I would LOVE to stay home with Hunter.  It just isn't in the cards for us.  I think there are pros and cons to both sides and that whatever side you pick is what is best for your family.  There is no right or wrong, only what suits your family's needs.

My school loan (all of grad school and half of my undergrad) is insane.  The payment on it is insane.  We wouldn't be able to pay that if I didn't work.  If we didn't pay it, our wages could be garnished (especially our income tax return), we wouldn't be able to purchase our "forever" home, etc., etc.

I like being able to pay all of our bills and still have some "fun" money.  Without the fun money, we wouldn't be able to be members at the Y, be members of TLG, or have memberships to the zoo and Children's Museum (all of which we have purchased for Hunter... believe it or not I've only worked out twice with our Y membership).

I also like the fact that we can pay our mortgage so we have a roof over our heads.  And we can put food on the table.  And the fact that we could afford to have Hunter on Nutramigen like he needed.

I like putting into practice what I spent so many years learning about.  It is fun.  It gives me adult interaction.  I enjoy my job.  Do I love it more than Hunter?  Of course not!  But my job is what helps allow us to do the things mentioned above (this is all including Carl's job as well).  It is also very rewarding to make a difference in a child's life.  I still remember my speech therapist.

Ultimately, I do what I do for Hunter.  Everything that Carl and I do, we do with Hunter as our number 1 priority.

And I just want to say that I love Mrs. Cathy (Hunter's sitter) and I'm very thankful she is in our lives.

I work too, and I love our daycare provider, my work has been super flexible so I work in office about 70% of the time and I can work at home the rest. I've heard the argument why work to pay for daycare, but that's not it, there's more to it than that, and like you, we have student loans too (what a drag no?), and not everyone can afford to stay at home. I think my kid has learned more being around other kids every day, than I would be able to provide on my own, too.

LOVE THIS POST! I don't understand why women and mothers can't lift each other up. If you work, great. If you stay at home, great. Do what's best for YOUR family! :)

Summers off is always good too ;)

I am so annoyed when people say that. I worked part time and raised my kids for three and a half years and I loved it. I liked contributing and having more fun money. I liked my friends and I miss them like crazy. Once there were three, well, it just became impractical for me to keep working!

I stay home, but I don't think it makes me a better mom than anyone! I just don't understand why people feel the need to push their opinions about motherhood on anyone. Unless your one year old is walking around with a loaded gun or drinking alcohol I don't understand the need to judge other moms!

Thanks ladies! It really annoyed me when she said that (it was on fb too... and she didn't even know me!). There is no one-size fits all family style these days and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way. :]
